Rising to the Global Challenge of Ocean Plastic Pollution

Ocean plastic pollution has reached a crisis level, threatening the world’s marine ecosystems, major industries such as fishing and tourism, food security, and ultimately human health. Every day, the equivalent of an entire cargo ship of plastic makes its way into the world’s oceans — roughly 11 million tons annually. Fortunately, with the passage of the Save Our Seas Act 2.0 and new programs and partnerships, USAID and the U.S. Government are ramping up efforts to address the ocean plastics crisis internationally.

Communities, Climate, and Coastal Ecosystems

Through partners worldwide, the UNEP / GEF Blue Forests Project has explored and tested blue forests methodologies and approaches to harness ecosystem services and support carbon financing initiatives while addressing key knowledge gaps and international policy engagement. The project results incorporate tools and solutions for the greater global application of blue carbon assessment and accounting, payment for ecosystem services, and enhancing capacity for a sustainable blue economy.
