Blue Talks Kenya- Towards a plastic pollution free planet- Building up on solutions through youth, private and informal sectors

8 June, 2022 at 10:00 AM-12:00 PM Nairobi (UTC+03:00)

Pursuant to General Assembly decision 75/578 of 9 September 2021, the United Nations Conference to support the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development will be held, in Lisbon, Portugal, from 27 June to 1 July 2022. The theme of the United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC) 2022 is “Scaling up the ocean action based on science and innovation for the implementation of Goal 14: stocktaking, partnerships and solutions”.

The Eight Interactive Dialogues should, primarily, be able to follow up on the issues, gaps, challenges, opportunities, and partnerships identified and discussed at the 2017 Conference and at the 2018 Sustainable Blue Economy Conference. While factoring in the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, they should recommend further innovative, tangible, and measurable action for the purpose of meeting all targets of this Goal dedicated to life below water.

The Blue Talks Kenya meeting concept notes is part of the setting up of the “Blue Talks” during the World Ocean Day, 8th June 2022. They provide a brief overview of the issues each Dialogue could tackle, contextualizing the debate with an overview of the status quo while underlining the urgency of finding solutions to the challenges identified. They provide hints to the topics each debate might come across, suggesting potential ramifications, and promoting reflection on the methods and different approaches at our disposal to tackle oceans and climate change related challenges.
